The shape of it
About the tides at Tywyn
Tywyn sits on Cardigan Bay, where the tide comes in and goes out twice a day, a little under half an hour later each day. Today the water moves between 0.5m to 5.0m, a range of about 4.5m.
Around the new and full moon the range is at its greatest, uncovering the widest stretch of firm sand at low water. This week the range is easing off day by day, so expect smaller tides by the weekend.
The biggest range this week falls on Sunday, with about 4.7m between high and low water. Low water uncovers the widest stretch of firm sand, which is when the beach walks are best.

The flood tide runs fast over flat sand
The beach shelves gently, so an incoming tide covers a lot of ground quickly. Keep an eye on the water behind you while the tide is coming in.
Currents at the river mouths
The Dysynni to the north and the Dyfi to the south both run strongly on the ebb. Stay clear of the channels when the tide is falling.
Look for the red flag
A red flag flying means the water is unsafe, so stay out. Beach wardens patrol the main beach in season and are there to help – always follow their advice.
